Harvest Moon Festival

The full moon closest to the autumn equinox is referred to as the Harvest Moon. In China, on this full moon, the Mid-Autumn Festival or Harvest Moon Festival takes place. Celebrations are largely family oriented with whole families going outdoors to watch the full moon rise. Then the feasting begins, Moon Cakes which are special, round cakes stuffed with sweet filling are served and thanks are given to heaven for blessings received in the previous year. During the rebellion against Mongolian rulers in the 14th century CE, secret communications were hidden in moon cakes to allow the rebels to formulate their attack plans. The Mongolians were overthrown and the Ming Dynasty, which lasted almost 300 years, began. This full moon is also thought to be the birthday of the earth god, Tu-ti Kung. The god receives prayers and gifts of thanks for the bounty he sustained in the fields.
