Meditations :: Elements Meditation

These meditations are best practiced outdoors, one element at a time, near the corresponding element. The water meditation is execellent when sitting on a beach for example. If you live inland, where a beach does not exist but a river, stream or lake does, modify the words to suit your needs. When doing these meditations, it may help to hold an item that represents the element to you. You may also like to speak as if you are the element, if you do so use "I" statements such as "I am solid earth" to affirm that you are the element.

If you must meditate indoors, this sigil, graciously provided by Rin Daemoko, will provide an excellent point of contemplation.

Air

Sit quietly, breathe in and feel air fill your lungs. Exhale. Feel your breath of life escaping out of your body into the world beyond. As you breathe in again, see the small molecules of air flowing into your nose and over your tongue, down into your lungs where it fills them completely. Transformed by the natural processes of your body, let air flow back out to feed the cycle. As air is part of the cycle of life and a part of you, you are part of the cycle. Feel yourself go with air as it exits your body. Transformed, you drift with it, as it catches a breeze, so do you and you float higher above the earth. Become Air. Feel the weightlessness and freedom. You are no longer bound by the other elements or even the natural law of gravity. You are air. Floating with it, riding the breezes and gusts as birds do. Move with air, let it carry you away into the clouds. Air is everywhere, constantly in motion, undulating in and out of everything on earth. As a being of air, you are freed to move with it. Passing through solid structures, rusting leaves on branches, supporting the wings of birds. Allow this to happen, move with the element. You may glide or soar, gust or squall as is the nature of air. Let yourself be carried away on the element. Feel it all around you, in you, with you, being you. See the world as air might, at dawn, new and fresh, covered with dew, just coming alive. Enjoy the movements and the feelings. Acknowledge the mighty power of air. When you are ready, reacquaint yourself with the earth. Gravity gently draws you back down to the ground beneath your feet. Feel solidity returning to your limbs, the water coursing through your body, the fire of life burning with in. Return to your physical nature, a composite of all elements.

Fire

As you sit quietly, feel the heat at your center. Inside you is the spark of life. Feel it growing in concentration, becoming hotter and more intense. It warms your entire body, thawing your limbs and enveloping you in a fiery glow of red, orange and gold. The air around you begins to warm with the heat that you are creating. Feel your connection to the element, see that it is a part of you and you a part of it. No creature is made entirely of fire, but all contain the spark that creates and the blaze that destroys. Feel the heat of the noon day sun radiating high above. See the area around you catch fire. Flames leap and lick but do not burn because now, you are fire. You contain the element, you are the element and its nature is your own. As fire creates, transforms and destroys, so do you. Picture your body, not as solid matter but as a flame of the burning fire that surrounds you. Scorching the ground, being fed by air. Breath in the air, leap higher, allow it to feed you. Grow stronger, shoot up ever higher. Feel the nature of the element, let yourself be carried away with the flames. Allow yourself to see the world as fire would. Transforming. Morphing. Moving. Move with it and acknowledge your own power and passion as a being of fire. When you are ready, allow the fire to recede from you. Moving out of your body, the flames surround you, maintaining your warmth and fed by your inner fire. Feel the earth beneath you, bringing you back to the firmament, water flows in your body, gentle breezes glide past. Return to your physical nature, a composite of all the elements.

Water

As you begin to relax, know that mortals are made of mostly water. Without it, we would die. Feel this moisture inside of you. In your tears and sweat, your blood and fluids. It courses through your veins and nourishes your brain. As you are part of water and water is part of all life, so you are a part of the life cycle. You are never without water, it surrounds you, sustains you. It is you. Allow yourself to become water. One drop among billions, unique and your own. Feel the constraints of the physical melt away. Move freely, without inhibition. The tide is ebbing. Flow with the waves as they carry you toward the depths of the ocean. All around you, life is enveloped by water, see this as water would. See the moon ruling from high above, its light glinting off your surface. Envision the sea creatures moving within you, being sustained by you. Rain begins to fall, but it is a part of water, a part of you. Feel it tickle your surface and become one with you. Let yourself be carried on the currents. Move as water, all around the world, up streams, inlets and bays. Lap at the beaches and bring some of their sand with you, return it to the depths of the ocean. Move to the colder waters of the poles and trenches, see icebergs rise high above and penetrate far into your depths. Pass the equator and feel yourself and the water surrounding you becoming warmer, the tides shift and you move in unison with them. As you travel with the cycles of water, undulating, evaporating, condensing, sleeting, storming, snowing, freezing, acknowledge the powerful force of which you are a part. When you are ready to return, flow with the tide as it moves back to shore. See a fire burning bright on the beach, guiding you back to the physical. Feel the sand beneath your feet and the air chill your damp skin. Return to your physical nature, a composite of all the elements.

Earth

As your body begins to let go, feel how heavy it is. Be aware of how strong and solid your bones are, like stones. Recognize the gravity of earth pulling you down, drawing you in. Let it. Move your awareness from above to below. Feel the ground beneath you and travel lower. Through the soft dirt, past the pebbles of the top soil, past the roots of trees and plants around you. Move past all of this. See the earthworms and life that exists down here. Move past them all, through the dark, heavy soil and allow yourself to become solid, like the earth itself. Feel how firm, sure and unyielding you are becoming. Your limbs are tree roots, your torso as concrete as a bolder. Allow the element to move into you, drawing forward the aspects of yourself that are already a part of it. Become the element and move freely within it, earth moves slowly. It does not recognize our time because it has always existed. There is no hurry here. See the animals that burrow for safety within earth, allow them to burrow inside of you, you are earth, solid, timeless, and sacred. See all things as earth would see them. Taking nourishment from you and returning to you in the end. Feed the life around you and take from it in turn. You feel the tickle of the world above as it moves across your surface. Your body is cooled by the oceans above. Acknowledge the power of earth to create, sustain and destroy as it sees fit, with no regard for mortal constructs. Below your solid nature, lies the flowing lava that will explode from within, destroying all in its path then slowly cooling to form new creations that will sustain new life. Feel this power residing within you, for you are a part of earth. Enjoy the feeling of earth and when you are ready to return, move back through the layers of rock, soil and roots. Wiggle your finger and toes, feel the wind on your face and the water flowing through your veins. Return to your physical nature, a composite of all the elements.
