History of Herbs :: Continuing History
Today, all forms of alternative healing are gaining new adherents. The cost of medical care is skyrocketing and people are beginning to look for more natural alternatives to chemically produced medicines that are often accompanied by painful side effects. Homeopathic, holistic and herbal courses are being offered at colleges and universities around the world and specialized colleges have sprung up in the last 30 years. The turn of the cycle seems to have brought us back to our roots, to the healing gifts of nature and the spiritual side of healing. Ayurvedic and Asian medicine is gaining popularity in the West, alongside traditional Western medicine.
Doctors do continue to dispute the efficacy of herbal treatments, as should be done. Nothing should be accepted as fact simply because it is old. The two disciplines work best when conjoined, as scientific studies validate or repudiate ancient herbal treatments, both fields are enhanced. Science expands its horizons and the field of herbalism gains and understanding of its inner workings.
